In February the gardens begin to stir from its winter slumber. Winter aconites and the first snowdrops and crocuses are in bloom, and by the end of the month primroses and early daffodils such as 'February Gold' may be making an appearance.
This can be a time of considerable activity for those with greenhouse's especially if it is maintained at a temperature warm enough for propagation.
Jobs to do now:
- Knock any heavy snow from the trees and shrubs and keep an area of pond 'ice-free'
- Protect vulnerable plants from frost and wind damage by covering with horticultural fleece.
- Weather permitting, now is a good time to move any dormant conifers and shrubs or plant roses so they flower this summer.
- Collect up and compost fallen leaves, in case they harbour diseases
- Dig over vacant beds and add plenty of organic matter - Arthur Bowers Blended Farm Manure is great for the job.
- Improve the insulation in your greenhouse by lining it with bubble wrap.
- Crops to sow outside under cloches now include hardy peas, broad beans, radishes, parsnips and spinach.
- Keep feeding the birds!
- Add a general organic slow release fertiliser like bone meal to beds and borders at this time of year, and their nutrients will be released as plant start into re growth.
- Remember to buy seed potatoes, summer flowering bulbs and plug plants now or you might miss out.
